National Speaker: Andy Buck (September 2021)

Jamie MaKinster | Published on 9/14/2021
We're back! I hope you can join us at our first national meeting, next Friday, September 17th.

Andy Buck will present a retrospective of his work entitled Works in Furniture and Sculpture. Andy spent much of his youth living in Geneva, Switzerland while his father, an expert in tropical medicine, worked for the World Health Organization. Immersed in an international environment, Andy gained an appreciation for multiculturalism and was first exposed to the many cultural and geographical wonders of the world. Inspired first by African and Oceanic artifacts through his father’s frequent travels, his fascination with unique artistic perspectives and global interpretations of the natural world has guided his creative practice as a furniture designer and artist. An active maker for more than 30 years, Andy has exhibited his work in galleries and museums throughout the United States, in Europe and Australia. Bringing together traditional craftsmanship, investigations in form, pattern, and colorful painted surfaces, his work of furniture and sculpture is included in both public and private collections.

Andy is the Director of the Woodworking and Furniture Design Program and a Professor at RIT. He's been working with wood for over 30 years. Andy received his MFA in Industrial Design/Furniture Design from the Rhode Island School of Design. He taught at Oregon College of Art and Craft and has traveled extensively to both share his work and engage in collaborations. In 2018 he traveled to Australia to teach a master class during the Wood Dust Designer Maker Festival. And in 2019, Andy was invited to World Wood Day in Austria, which brings together artists and designers from around the world to share and collaborate.

“As an undergrad, I enrolled in a furniture design elective for required credits. I soon discovered that making things and using my hands was an amazing and empowering experience… Furniture design was right for me because it allowed for creative problem solving, the development of my artist voice and the empowering feeling of making things with my hands.”
