Finger Lakes Woodturners

FLW May Newsletter

Next Meeting

The next meeting will be held on Monday, June 4th at 7PM at the Woodcraft Store on Jefferson Road. The presentation will be made by Ed DeMay. He will be showing slides that were taken in Seiffen, Germany, an area noted for Hoop or Ring turning and famous for the Nutcrackers.

Instant Gallery

Don't forget to bring your items for the Instant Gallery. It can be new, old, or in between. As long as it's related to woodturning, it's welcome.

Minutes of the May BOD meeting

Finger Lakes Woodturners – Board of Directors Meeting for May 2001 was held on May 29th at Bill Tschorke’s home with Doug Crittenden, Bill Tschorke and Edward DeMay present.

Various pros and cons were discussed concerning the possibility holding meetings at Woodcraft. Further discussion will be held at the next meeting. With the change in the Operating year from January 1st to September 1st for FLW to coincide with RWS’s year, elections were discussed. It was decided to have a vote by the membership on the next meeting to decide if we vote in a new board each year or replace 2 members each year with each member serving 2 years. With this decision completed it is hoped that elections can be held and completed for the change this September.

There will be a raffle for the items donated by Norton and a drawing held. Finishing touches for the September speaker and seminar will be completed with the incoming Board members. As always there was discussion on the growing Instant Gallery and the fine quality of the items displayed. Members are encouraged to bring in anything that might be of interest to the group. Meeting was adjourned at 9:00 PM.

Minutes of the May Meeting

The May meeting of the Finger Lakes Woodturners was called to order by President Doug Crittenden at RIT on May 7, 2001 at 7:00 PM . Norton Abrasives representatives, Paul Krupa and Debbie Gaspich, were introduced and spoke at length on the various aspects of coated and bonded abrasives, including grain structure, application, manufacturing process and which products are best for our usage. The information presented greatly enhanced our knowledge of abrasives and will be useful in helping members decide which abrasives are best suited for our applications. Our thanks to them and Norton for this presentation.

Doug then conducted the rest of the monthly meeting. There was much discussion on the pros and cons of moving to Woodcraft and it was decided to try it by having our monthly meeting for June there. The owner was contacted and agreed to that idea and the June meeting will be held there Monday June 4th at 7:00 PM. This will give us an idea of the space limitations, equipment available, and classroom setting, to more properly make a decision. It was moved by Ralph Mosher and approved to have the yearly dues collection and business year run concurrently with RWS starting with the up coming September meeting. It was also suggested and discussed that 2 officers of the SIG be elected each year. This would entail that each officer be elected for a 2-year term. This idea was tabled for the time being and will be discussed at a future meeting as time was running long due to the presentation and there was no hurry or need for immediate change.

The idea of safety equipment was brought up and it was suggested that the demonstrator have the proper equipment but members attending would be optional but recommended. There will be no official meeting during the months of July and August but members might take the opportunity of getting together in small groups on an informal basis just to keep in touch.

Doug conducted the instant gallery and the number of entries each meeting is growing by leaps and bounds. The number and variety is expanding also. It is very evident that we have a lot of talent within the SIG. Anyone having or making something unique that might want to demonstrate these techniques at a meeting please contact the Board and share your ideas with us. Remember you are already half way there with your willingness to bring in items for the instant gallery.

The Norton Rep’s were very gracious in bringing several items for the SIG and these will be raffled of this meeting. They include a 6-inch grinding wheel, sharpening oil, a dressing stick, some diamond honing compound and a water stone set. Any one still wanting a vacuum pump, contact Kurt Hertzog.

Meeting was adjourned at approximately 10:00 PM.
