The monthly Board of Directors Meeting for February 2001 was called to order by VP Bill Tschorke at the home of Don Osborne. The following items were discussed. 1.) the possibility of setting up our own Turning show in the Rochester Area. Location, vendor presentations, exhibits, judges, and possibility of prizes were discussed, 2.) An email was sent to Norton Abrasives to see if they have someone able to give a presentation at one of our meetings, as of 2/25/01 nothing has been received. 3.) the woodworking show in Hamburg and the need for members to man the show. Don will be setting it up and taking it down. 4.) there are still some members of the Turning SIG that are not members of RWS. 5.) Next months presentation will be on making pepper mills by Don Osborne and a review of chucking methods. This is being covered again as there are many new members. Please if you have any method you use to hold wood please bring it to the meeting. Bill Tschorke will be demonstrating his method of making jam chucks. Meeting was adjourned at 9:00 PM

Vice President Bill Tschorke at RIT called the monthly meeting of the Finger Lakes Woodturners to order on Monday February 5, 2001. VP Tschorke will be making arraignments for nametags for new members. Don Osborne has made arraignments for FLWT to have a booth at the Woodworking show at the Erie County Fair Grounds the first weekend in March. He needs help in manning the Booth and Items for display. There were 9 visitors at the monthly meeting. Each month the instant gallery has more items for display. It is evident that much time and consideration is going into the items for display. Items are requested for every meeting finished or not, and even mistakes are requested. We learn from all of them and this way we don’t have to make all of the mistakes our selves. Ed Tschantz spoke on making wooden plates as the early settlers might have done. All in all there were Bowls, vases, goblets, a clock and candleholders and the exhibitors all gave excellent backgrounds concerning their items. Keep up the good work
The featured speaker for the evening was Tom Farrar from Farrar Technology, 8213 Wesley Road, Bloomfield, New York 14469, 716-657-7663 on the various types of steel used in the making of turning tools. Tom spoke on the various kinds of high-speed steels available, their unique natures, and which ones might be best utilized by members practicing our craft. Tom’s excellent presentation answered many questions from the members and put to rest many myths concerning sharpening, shaping, tempering and general usage of steel in turning tools.
Next meeting will be March 5, 2001 at 7:00 PM at RIT Various methods of lathe chucks will be discussed – please bring in anything that you have made, purchased or use for discussion.
