April 23, 2005 — Conducted by Roy Underhill of "The Woodwright's Shop." Location: Genesee Country Village and Museum (Mumford, NY).
Roy will demonstrate his hand tool techniques on an early 19th century workbench the museum recently acquired.
For the morning and early afternoon part of the workshop, we’ll be in the educational center at the museum. This is a new building with comfortable seating and a setting where it will be easy to watch Roy work in comfort regardless of the weather outside.
Workshop registration will begin at the usual 9:00 a.m., with the class starting at 9:30 a.m.. Lunch will be provided by the museum. At about 2:00 we’ll go from the educational center to two of the shops in the restored village. First, a stop at the wheelwright’s shop where we’ll have Roy turn on a spring pole lathe and show a wheel lathe which would have been driven by an apprentice. Then on to the gunsmith/cabinet shop (my shop at the village) where he can turn on the treadle lathe, and time permitting, show some other basic woodworking techniques at the bench.
For the afternoon sessions at the shops, we may be in tight quarters if the weather is bad that day and the shops will not be heated. So please plan to have warm weather gear if it turns out to be cold that day.
Directions to Genesee Country village: go to Mumford via the Scottsville road (Rt. 383) from Rochester, or via Rt. 5 from the Avon exit off I-390. At the blinker light in Mumford, turn west onto George St. which becomes Flint Hill road – the village is about ¾ mile from the blinker. Turn left into the parking lot, and park to the left. The educational center is next to the large red building you’ll see from the parking lot. We’ll have RWS signs to guide you. See you on the 23rd. Jim Altemus
