Sharpening Workshop

After lunch, John Britton led off the afternoon with flat blades
John covered sharpening plane irons, chisels, and scrapers
One of John's chisels, mirror finish on front and back
John shows the setup of his Veritas sharpening jig

John has made some helpful modifications to his diamond stone setup
One of the students comes up to try things out
John offers some helpful suggestions
The back is also important, being done while still in the jig

Care is used in cleaning off the swarf
John explains the two different leather strops he uses
Rather than shave his arm, John prefers to shave a plastic pen
After chisels, John moved on to plane irons

One of John's garage sale finds sports the sharpened blade
A couple of quick strokes on a piece of Red Oak...
yields nice curly shavings showing the blades readiness for use
