Sharpening Workshop

Setting up for the Sharpening workshop at Woodcraft
The workshop drew 23 attendees
The opening presentation was by Don Cole, a metallurgist
Don covered the basics of tool steels and their care

Kurt Hertzog followed with a talk on grinding wheels and stones
An explanation on how a grinding wheel cuts material
A comparison of different tools to different grinding wheels
Ralph Mosher did a presentation on sharpening turning tools

Of particular importance was the desired shapes and angles
Ralph demonstrates the Ellsworth jig for doing Irish grinds
Here Ralph shows his technique for gouge sharpening...
and his method for putting a burr on a scraper

Some of the class checks out the results
The importance of a good tool rest is often overlooked
It was a "hands on" day so students were welcome to try
As usual, the lunch featured DiBella's subs
